Travel advisories apply up to four standard levels :

We issue a travel advisory for each state in India. Travel advisories follow a consistent format and use simple language to help Indian and foreign nationals find and access important safety information. Travel advisories apply up to four standard levels of advice, describing risks, and providing clear actions that Indian and foreign nationals should take to help ensure their safety.

1 to 4 part level :

  The Travel Advisory appears at the top of each country page, with a color corresponding to each level: 

1 part level out of 4 - Take General Precautions: 

This is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. Any national or international travel carries some risk.         

Conditions may vary by state and in other countries and may change at any time.

2 part level out of 4 - Take extra precautions: 

Be aware of the increased risks to safety and security. In travel advisory, the department provides additional advice for 

travelers in these areas to the states. Situations in any state or country can change at any time.

3 part level out of 4 - Travel Reconsidered: 

Avoid traveling due to serious safety and security risks. In travel advisory, the department provides additional advice for 

travelers in these areas to the states. Situations in any state or country can change at any time.

4 part level out of 4 – About Do Not Travel: 

This is the highest advisory level, from a country like the US, due to the high potential for life-threatening risks. During an 

emergency, the Indian government may have a very limited capacity to provide assistance. The country of India 

recommends that Indian citizens not travel to the country at the time of emergency or leave as soon as it is safe to do so. 

Travel Advisory provides additional advice for travelers in those areas of the country. Situations in any country can change 

at any time.

Different Level:

We issue an overall travel advisory level for a country, but advisory levels may vary for specific locations or regions in a 

country. For example, we can advise citizens to "take more precautions" (Level 2) in a country, but "reconsider travel" 

(Level 3) in a particular area within the country.

Peril (Risk) Indicators :

Travel Advisories at Levels 2-4 contain clear reasons for the level assigned, using established risk indicators and specific 

advice to U.S. citizens who choose to travel there. These are:
